The medical bulletin issued by Mount Elizabeth Hospital confirmed that when Damini arrived at the hospital yesterday, she had infection of her lungs and abdomen, significant brain injury and has suffered a prior cardiac arrest.
“The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life. A multi-disciplinary team of specialists has been working tirelessly to treat her since her arrival, and is doing everything possible to stabilise her condition over the next few days. The High Commission of India has been fully supportive in helping the hospital and her family, and ensuring that the best care is made available,” the medical bulletin reads.
The 23-year-old Damini (not the actual name) was raped for nearly an hour in New Delhi bus and both she and her companion were beaten with iron bars and thrown out of the moving bus on street. The rape victim since then has been in critical condition despite being under constant medical supervision.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi in her first public statement regarding the case proclaimed that guilty in Delhi gangrape case must be punished soon. Wishing for rapid recovery of the 23-year-old victim Sonia Gandhi told reporters at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, “Our wish is that she recovers and comes back to us… and no time is lost in bringing perpetrators of the crime to justice.”
The rising public anger in the wake of the Damini rape case has forced Indian government to announce a series of measures for making the capital safer for women. Measures such as more police night patrols, checks on bus drivers and the banning of buses with tinted windows or curtains have been promised. The government has also decided to name and shame the convicted rapists in Delhi gangrape case.
