Koirala elected as parliamentary party leader

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 26 - Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has been elected as the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader of the party through the election held at NC's PP office in Singha Durbar on Sunday.
Koirala defeated his opponent, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba with a vote difference of 16 votes. Koirala was able to secure 105 votes while Deuba trailed behind with 89 votes.
This win guarantees Koirala to lead the next government as the prime minister.
The voting process began at 8:30 am today but was interrupted after problems with the electronic voting machine. Although 17 lawmakers had cast their votes, the machine registered only 16.
Following the unending row over who should be the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader, NC resorted to holding an election for the position after the senior leaders of the party could not reach a consensus on a single name. Koirala and Deuba had registered their candidacies for the post on Saturday. NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel availed with his support to Koirala. Koirala.
