If you thought sex sells, playing a commercial sex worker sells even more. In tinselville, this role has time and again proved to be one of the fastest ways for an actress to gain stardom. While Bollywood films like Umrao Jaan, Chameli and Chandni Bar remain etched in our minds, Sandalwood actresses aren't shying away from essaying a sex worker. Here are some who've recently gone bold for their on screen assignments.
NEETHU The actress has come a long way from her tomboy Gaalipata avatar. Neethu will be playing a sex worker in V Ravichandaran's Crazy Star and in her own words has "exposed like never before." "I'd been approached for such roles before, but I trust only Ravi sir to portray me aesthetically, which is why I accepted the role of Chameli," she says.
What she expects from the role: Prove that she can essay all kinds of characters

AINDRITA RAY Known for her girl-next-door image, the lass surprised everyone when she went bold in Kaddipudi, by playing a commercial sex worker and even baring her back. "Director Suri is an artist in real life and he made me look like a painting. I can never do this for anyone else again," she says.
What she expected from the role: "If I can play a schizophrenic in Manasaare, I can play a commercial sex worker, too. I've got lots of appreciation everytime I have played off-the-kilter roles," she says.
SHUBHA PUNJA Having played a bar girl in Slum Bala, Shubha has portrayed gritty roles early in her career. "I wanted to play such a role ever since I watched Jayanthi amma in Masanada Hoovu. I was more than happy when I was asked to play a commercial sex worker in my upcoming flick," says Shubha, adding, "I will be playing a commercial sex worker in another film that will go on the floors shortly," says Shubha.
