First-Look: 'Day Men' Issue 3 (Exclusive)
ritten by Matt Gagnon and with art by Brian Stelfreeze, the third installment of the comic book series tells the One of the hotter independent comics out there is Boom! Studios' Day Men.
The book, written by Matt Gagnon with art by Brian Stelfreeze, is a unique take on the seemingly undying vampire genre: It tells the story of the men who handle the affairs of vampires while the sun is out and the bloodsuckers are napping.
The first issue sold out of its initial 12,000-copy first printing and generated Hollywood interest, with Universal picking up the movie rights. The second issue also went to a second printing; Wednesday sees the arrival of the third issue.
PREVIEW ART: 'Vampire Diaries' Comes to Comics (Preview Art)
Gagnon came up with the idea for Day Men about four years ago when he wanted to tell a vampire story from a human point of view. When he crossed the concept with another genre he liked, crime, and the idea of vampire clans being like Mafia families, it clicked.
"I started thinking, 'Who cleans up for them during the day?' and 'What kind of person do you have to be to take on this position?' " says Gagnon.
The hardest part of the process was the actual writing: Gagnon also is Boom!'s editor-in-chief and his busy day job forces him to write on weekends or early in the morning.
STORY: 'Vampire Diaries' Hits 100 Episodes: Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Execs Tell All
Day Men is part of the creator-owned renaissance that is invigorating the comics industry, a renaissance that is seeing a lot of books with fresh ideas and original concepts being not only published but thriving, with some books' buzz rivaling that of the titles coming out of the Big Two, DC and Marvel.
You can thank Image -- with titles like Saga, Pretty Deadly and perennial best-seller The Walking Dead -- for much of the buzz, but Boom! has been no slouch, thanks to books like Six-Gun Gorilla and Day Men.
"There’s a real hunger right now for things that are new," says Gagnon.

Predicting the Best Supporting Actress Oscar: Jennifer Lawrence vs. Lupita Nyong'o
There are only a few days left until the 2014 Academy Awards, so most of our predictions are solidified by now. But even though Cate Blanchett appears to be a lock for Best Actress and Alfonso Cuaron has the highest odds of winning Best Director, there's still one race that's impossible to guess: Best Supporting Actress. The two candidates who could snag the trophy are Lupita Nyong'o for her work in 12 Years a Slave and Jennifer Lawrence for her performance in American Hustle.
Normally, we could just rely on the previous awards shows to help influence our predictions. Blanchett and Cuaron have both swept their categories, as have Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (who we think will take Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively). But Lawrence and Nyong'o have split the opinions of the various awards organizations, which means the Oscar is still anyone's game. In an attempt to solve this problem once and for all and help you solidify your Oscar pool, we've taken a look back at all of the women who have won Best Supporting Actress in order to see if we could use the winners of yesteryear to determine who will walk home with the trophy on Oscar night.
Movies: American Hustle, Jennifer Lawrence, Maggie Smith, California Suite, Helen Hayes, Jared Leto, Anastasia, Celeste Holm, Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Hudson, Murder on the Orient Express, Gaslight, The Sin of Madelon Claudet, Octavia Spencer, Anne Baxter, Ingrid Bergman, Mary Steenburgen, Marisa Tomei, Olympia Dukakis, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Moonstruck, Mighty Aphrodite, Cactus Flower, Josephine Hull, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, My Cousin Vinny, Penélope Cruz, Halle Berry

Lost Girl’ Recap: XXX-Mas in March
I think we can all agree that the last two episodes of Lost Girl have been a little lackluster. A bird Fae and a weird French flashback are not the best adventures for our favorite supernatural crew. Luckily, this week marks a return to the funny, frisky, and Fae-tastic (not quite Buffy-ish) fantasy. There’s an appearance by Krampus, who is a blend of Tim Allen’s character in The Santa Clause and the Robot Santa on Futurama. He punishes the naughty with death but is still a sweet old man. But quite horny... literally, with two ram horns.
This episode begins with Bo channeling her inner sorority girl by washing her car in the most gratuitously sexual way. After all, nothing gets the grime like water freshly fallen off boobs. Check your car manual, it’s true. As per usual, Lauren and Dyson hope desperately to be her number one. They are really starting to bond. Given the sexual fluidity of the show, could they end up hooking up?
The gang is celebrating Yule. It’s like Fae Christmas, only they celebrate by getting utterly smashed and the only present is not getting killed. The gang seems to be overcompensating to show Bo they appreciate her. And yet, they ignore her.
